How do these two teams match up?

The Final Four is here, and it features an incredible slate of games. However, the most anticipated matchup of the tournament may be between the Michigan Wolverines and the Arizona Wildcats.

Michigan enters this game at 35-3 after dominating the Midwest Region. The Wolverines’ tournament wins have come by margins of 21, 23, 13, and 33 points. According to KenPom, Michigan ranks fifth in offensive efficiency and boasts one of the most efficient offenses in the country. The Wolverines rank first in field goal percentage, fifth in three-point percentage, and fourth in near-proximity shooting. They do much of their damage inside, ranking 11th in near-proximity shot attempts. However, when the three-point shot is falling, Michigan becomes nearly unstoppable. The Wolverines have made 10 or more threes in all four tournament games and shot better than 45 percent from long-range in three of those four games.

Yaxel Lendeborg has been especially sensational throughout the tournament. Over his last three games, he is averaging 25 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 4 assists per game while knocking down 3, 4, and 3 three-pointers in those contests. When Lendeborg is hitting from deep, he becomes one of the most dangerous players in the country. Elliot Cadeau has also been a major contributor, averaging 12.3 points and 8.3 assists over his last three games. Cadeau did suffer an allergic reaction just before the flight to Indianapolis, but he is expected to be fine.

Still, the most important players for Michigan in this matchup may be its two big men, Morez Johnson Jr. and Aday Mara. Arizona’s offense thrives on scoring inside, so both will need to protect the paint while also contributing offensively. Morez Johnson Jr. has been a physical presence throughout the tournament, averaging 13.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. He will need to elevate his play in a physical matchup against Tobe Awaka. Aday Mara, a 7-foot-3 center, has shown flashes of dominance, scoring in double figures in three of four tournament games and recording a combined 11 blocks. His rim protection will be critical against an Arizona offense that ranks fourth in KenPom offensive efficiency.

Defensively, Michigan has been elite, ranking first in defensive efficiency according to KenPom. The Wolverines allow the second-lowest field goal percentage, seventh-lowest three-point percentage, sixth-lowest midrange percentage, and 10th-lowest near-proximity percentage. They also allow the ninth-fewest near-proximity attempts per game. Still, this will be their toughest test yet against one of the most efficient offenses in the country.

On the other side, Arizona enters the Final Four as the West Region champion following a 15-point win over Purdue. The Wildcats sit at 36-2 and also captured the Big 12 Championship. Any narrative about Arizona struggling in March has been put to rest, as the Wildcats have now reached their first Final Four in 25 years. This Arizona team is one of the best in program history.

Arizona ranks fourth in offensive efficiency according to KenPom. The Wildcats rank sixth in field goal percentage, 14th in near-proximity percentage, and 15th in three-point percentage. However, they attempt the third-fewest three-pointers in the country, relying heavily on interior scoring through drives and post play.

Arizona is led by a strong backcourt. Big 12 Player of the Year Jaden Bradley averages 13.3 points and 4.4 assists per game. Alongside him is freshman Brayden Burries, who averages 16.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Burries exploded for 23 points against Arkansas, a performance Arizona will likely need again against Michigan. In the frontcourt, freshman Koa Peat anchors the interior. A projected first-round pick, Peat averages 14.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and is playing his best basketball of the season, coming off back-to-back 20-point performances against Purdue and Arkansas.

Arizona also features key supporting pieces, including elite rebounder Tobe Awaka, sharpshooter Anthony Dell’Orso off the bench, 3-and-D wing Ivan Kharchenkov, and improving center Motiejus Krivas. Krivas, in particular, will need to step up in his matchup against Aday Mara. Defensively, Arizona ranks second in KenPom defensive efficiency, continuing the theme that defense wins at this stage of the tournament. The Wildcats allow the lowest field goal percentage, third-lowest three-point percentage, 26th-lowest midrange percentage, and third-lowest near-proximity percentage, while also allowing the fourth-fewest near-proximity attempts per game.

Fun Facts About Each Team’s Final Four History

Michigan Wolverines

  • 9 Final Four appearances

  • 1 national championship (1989)

  • Led by Glen Rice in their title win, who set a tournament scoring record in the championship game

  • 2-9 all-time against Arizona

Arizona Wildcats

  • 5 Final Four appearances

  • Recently ended a 25-year Final Four drought

  • 1 national championship

  • Won their title by defeating three No. 1 seeds, the first team ever to do so

Keys for Michigan to Win

  • Force Arizona to shoot threes: Arizona prefers scoring inside and is not as comfortable from deep. In both of their losses, they attempted 15 or more threes. If Michigan can push that number to 20 or more, it plays in the Wolverines’ favor.

  • Win the paint battle: Both teams thrive inside. Whichever team controls the paint will likely control the game.

Keys for Arizona to Win

  • Win the paint battle: This remains the most critical factor in the game.

  • Slow down Yaxel Lendeborg: Michigan’s offense runs heavily through him. Limiting his impact would significantly boost Arizona’s chances.

Final Thoughts

This has the potential to be the game of the tournament, if not the decade. Two elite teams, both capable of winning a national championship, will meet at Lucas Oil Stadium. This will not just be a game; it will be a battle in the paint.

Final Prediction: Michigan 76, Arizona 72
