Although the modern NBA has embraced a more positionless style of play, placing greater value on versatility and well-rounded skill sets on both ends of the floor, I still find it helpful to categorize prospects into the five traditional positions: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center. From an organizational standpoint, this approach helps us better assess the depth and makeup of each draft class. Below are my top-ranked shooting guards for this year’s draft, with links to scouting reports compiled by the Babcock Hoops prospect research team.
Top Shooting Guards
VJ Edgecombe | 6’4” | 193 lbs | Baylor | Freshman
Edgecombe’s explosive scoring and exceptional athleticism highlight his star potential—and I think he’s just scratching the surface. He reminds me of a young Russell Westbrook, a former league MVP.
Tre Johnson | 6’5” | 190 lbs | Texas | Freshman
A big two-guard who scores at all three levels, Johnson combines smooth shooting with an alpha mentality that sets him apart. He’s one of the top prospects in this class—a certified bucket-getter.
Jase Richardson | 6’1” | 178 lbs | Michigan State | Freshman
Richardson’s impact as a true freshman on one of the best teams in the country can’t be ignored. He plays the right way, contributes to winning, and makes a tangible difference on the court.
Hugo Gonzalez | 6’6” | 205 lbs | Real Madrid | International
A versatile player with a style of play that’s highly coveted, Hugo Gonzalez is an intriguing prospect. However, his limited role with Real Madrid this season has made it challenging to evaluate his readiness properly.
Chaz Lanier | 6’4” | 206 lbs | Tennessee | Senior
I’m impressed by Chaz Lanier. What stands out most is his ability to shoot from the outside and knock down a variety of shots—valuable and translatable skills.
Kam Jones | 6’3” | 202 lbs | Marquette | Senior
Kam Jones was already a proven shooter and scorer, but this past season, he showcased improved guard skills and elevated his production. He’s helped himself.
Tyrese Proctor | 6’4” | 183 lbs | Duke | Junior
With his size and versatility, Proctor brings a unique skill set that adds value. His ability to play on or off the ball only increases his pathways to success.
John Tonje | 6’5” | 212 lbs | Wisconsin | Senior
Tonje's shot-making and scoring ability stand out, and he’s certainly helped himself with his stellar play. He was terrific at Wisconsin this past season.
Hunter Sallis | 6’4” | 181 lbs | Wake Forest | Senior
After struggling at Gonzaga, Sallis thrived at Wake Forest, showcasing his athleticism, scoring ability, and versatility. I’m looking for him to carry that momentum into his professional career.
Alijah Martin | 6’2” | 208 lbs | Florida | Senior
Although there are questions about his exact fit at the next level, Martin's toughness and intangibles make him an intriguing prospect. I’d be hesitant to bet against him.
